![]() ![]() ![]() This causes Plex to convert the video/audio codec to something the streaming device can play. ![]() The reason that transcoding happens is that many devices that can stream content from Plex, the devices may not be able to play the movie because it doesn't support the video/audio codec. While you can try to have your Plex Media Server and clients direct play as much content as possible, there may be times when that isn't possible, and transcoding happens. The goal of managing a Plex server is to transcode as little as possible. Transcoding, however, can use up to 100% of the CPU, depending on what is being transcoded. The next best option is Direct stream because it uses little system resources but more than direct play. If you have a server that isn't capable of transcoding then your clients may be presented with a "This Server is not Powerful Enough to Convert Video" message on their screen.ĭirect play is the preferred method, as it uses the least amount of resources on the server. There are three methods that Plex Media Server will use to stream content to a device: direct play, direct stream, and transcoding, and out of the three methods, transcoding is used if Plex can't find a compatible movie file to stream to a device. Thank you, after years of using XMBC and later, Plex for visual, I've finally found my permanent music organisational and playback system.Learning how to avoid transcoding movie files from your Plex server is a common question, as it can cause issues if multiple movies are being transcoded at the same time. "how do you use plex media server to listen to music on apps at home"įinally, to the devs."Plexamp Vs Plex" for playback app for musicOr.I'd be interested to hear others' opinions of: For me, it's reconnected me to music and helped to reacquaint me with forgotten favorites. In my opinion, Plexamp is much better than subscription services. Ability to pick up from where you left off, across devices.Īfter reading this back, I'd just like to quantify, I love this program and use many features which I've not written here.(I use a workaround but it would be great to have an easy find/click button for While playing a track, have an ability to continue this track's radio station.(I'm dyslexic, it would help to visualise the interface consistently on every menu). It would be nice to see the option to view this list, as a grid (with customisable covers). In the " ♫ view" list, I'd prefer a better visual experience, most other menus are a grid with images. It would be great if songs which are tagged or identified as Christmas, are not played on radio stations (unless it's december)? When playing any library radio, sometimes Christmas songs come on.This isn't a complaint, rather, I wish both apps have these features. I recognise the difference between the two programs, Plex and Plexamp, the free vs pass options and I'm a PlexPass lifetime user. I'm more in tune with my local music as opposed to being 'fed' music by other commercial services. I switched from Spotify (and others) to Plex for music and by extension Plexamp around 6 months ago and I have to say, I so glad I made the switch. I'm a long time user of Plex for movies and TV shows but it's only been since 2020+ I've embraced plex for music. ![]()
